HERMITOLOGY

My name is Riley, and I play drums and write music for a band called Thrice.

This is where I ramble about music, sports, food, books, interwebbery, and whatever else I feel like sharing. I apologize in advance.

In addition to my ramblings here, I write a piece for OC Weekly called "3hree Things" that runs every Tuesday, and I'm also writing over at Flip Collective on occasion.

I'm the co-founder of a baseball-specific twitter feed and blog with my friend Ian, called Productive Outs.

And last, but not least, I have a bandcamp page and a soundcloud page that I'll be posting my own music and remixes on every once in a while.

Disclaimer: The views and opinions presented on this blog are mine, and do not reflect the position or views of the band as a whole.

These Arms Are Snakes (2002-2009)

*photo respectfully borrowed from the very talented Ryan Russell.

We’re less than two weeks into 2010, and we’ve already lost a great band.

Thrice had the opportunity to do a few West Coast shows with T.A.A.S. in 2006 and it was an absolute honor to share the stage with them. They’d been a favorite of mine since I’d first heard Oxeneers or the Lion Sleeps When Its Antelope Go Home in 2004, and have been highly inspiring and influential ever since. They had an energy and attitude on stage that has become increasingly hard to find in a music scene that has become cluttered with bands that think that disaffection and apathy are things to be proud of. Their sound complemented that energy and attitude perfectly; beautifully dischordant at times, hauntingly melodic at others, angular and abrasive, pissed off, and guaranteed to make you move (or move you.)

In the short time that we’ve known them, they’ve been nothing but kind to us, whether it’s Ed picking at Brian’s brain about bass gear, Teppei talking studio/recording shop with Chris, or me geeking out with Chris about playing and recording drums, and I thank them for that.

And I can’t thank them enough for their music and inspiration.

**related: further tribute to T.A.A.S. from their friend (and mine) Johnny Hugel.
