HERMITOLOGY

My name is Riley, and I play drums and write music for a band called Thrice.

This is where I ramble about music, sports, food, books, interwebbery, and whatever else I feel like sharing. I apologize in advance.

In addition to my ramblings here, I write a piece for OC Weekly called "3hree Things" that runs every Tuesday, and I'm also writing over at Flip Collective on occasion.

I'm the co-founder of a baseball-specific twitter feed and blog with my friend Ian, called Productive Outs.

And last, but not least, I have a bandcamp page and a soundcloud page that I'll be posting my own music and remixes on every once in a while.

Disclaimer: The views and opinions presented on this blog are mine, and do not reflect the position or views of the band as a whole.

RANDOM START: BAD RELIGION, “STRANGER THAN FICTION”

Bad Religion was the band that got me into punk rock (also: got me playing an instrument, made me want to join a band, and expanded my vocabulary by making me dig up definitions for words like “febrile”, “languid”, and “torped”), and because of that, they’ll always hold a special place in my heart and eardrums.

They say that songs and records serve as a soundtrack to crucial/life-changing moments in the movie that is your life, and this record is that for me and then some. Stranger Than Fiction came out 12 days before three of my best friends were killed in single car accident in Arizona. Every single song reminds me of someone, somewhere, something, or digs up a fistful of emotions related to the the craziest moment of my life and the days (and years) that followed.

The power of music never ceases to amaze me.
