My name is Riley, and I play drums and write music for a band called Thrice.
This is where I ramble about music, sports, food, books, interwebbery, and whatever else I feel like sharing. I apologize in advance.
In addition to my ramblings here, I write a piece for OC Weekly called “3hree Things” that runs every Tuesday, and I’m also writing over at Flip Collective on occasion.
I’m the co-founder of a baseball-specific twitter feed and blog with my friend Ian, called Productive Outs.
And last, but not least, I have a bandcamp page and a soundcloud page that I’ll be posting my own music and remixes on every once in a while.
Disclaimer: The views and opinions presented on this blog are mine, and do not reflect the position or views of the band as a whole.

In 1993, these guys (none of whom were actually black) blew up with a song about how to open a 40. I can’t imagine they’d have as successful in doing so, if it weren’t for House of Pain paving the way for white rappers bouncing around and rapping about how awesome they were with “Jump Around” in 1992.

I owned both records, so it’s kinda my fault. Sorry.

Random Start: Opeth, “Deliverance”

False Cathedrals came out twelve years ago and I’d go so far as to say that it’s one of the five best* emo records of those past twelve years. It still holds up and then some, and it’s crazy to think they weren’t a more successful band. While the record doesn’t have the fancy production bells and whistles of some of its more successful peers in the genre, the songs are there, the melodies are there, the emotion is there, and there’s a rawness and looseness that just feels like honesty to me. And in this particular genre, that should probably account for a lot.

Buy False Cathedrals here.

This is like getting lulled to sleep in a giant open pasture, only to wake up two minutes later and find yourself in the middle of a stampede of Godzillas.

What is Neurosis’ “End of Harvest”?

Correct.
Would someone hurry the hell up and build me a time machine already so I can go back to 2002 and play/watch another show with Mike and the CUAD dudes again?
I think mentioned this the last time Strike Anywhere popped up in a Random Start, but I’ll say it again; you’d be hard-pressed to find a kinder, harder-working and more uplifting band than these guys. I always felt like they’ve been underappreciated in the States, despite having released four great LPs and putting on a really energetic live show night in and night out.

This jam from the former New Edition frontman landed at #1 on the R&B charts back when I was a freshman in high school who wore Skidz overalls and Starter jackets in public. Despite Brandon Jennings’ best attempts to bring back the high-top fade a couple of years ago, it never really caught on again. I think we need a Ralph Tresvant revival if we’re ever going to make that happen.
Lithos of this piece and a lot of her other work should be available fairly soon.

Random Start: Textual, “With A Twist Of...

Random Start: Textual, “With A Twist Of Love”

Textual is the side project of producer/drummer/multi-instrumentalist Dave LeBleu, who is best known for his work in The Mercury Program (one of my favorite bands). Textual popped up a in Random Start a couple of months ago, and rather than rehashing an old post, I’ll keep it simple…if you’re into what you hear here, you need to pick up the entire Textual discography. (Don’t worry, there are only three releases and they’re all great.)

You can do that here.

This week's 3hree Things: On My Maiden Voyage To NAMM

This week's 3hree Things: On My Maiden Voyage To NAMM :
