Flashback Friday: Young Black Teenagers, “Tap The Bottle”

In 1993, these guys (none of whom were actually black) blew up with a song about how to open a 40. I can’t imagine they’d have as successful in doing so, if it weren’t for House of Pain paving the way for white rappers bouncing around and rapping about how awesome they were with “Jump Around” in 1992.

I owned both records, so it’s kinda my fault. Sorry.

Random Start: Elliott, “Blessed By Your Own Ghost”

False Cathedrals came out twelve years ago and I’d go so far as to say that it’s one of the five best* emo records of those past twelve years. It still holds up and then some, and it’s crazy to think they weren’t a more successful band. While the record doesn’t have the fancy production bells and whistles of some of its more successful peers in the genre, the songs are there, the melodies are there, the emotion is there, and there’s a rawness and looseness that just feels like honesty to me. And in this particular genre, that should probably account for a lot.

I pooped my pants a little when I saw this live. Probably the best dunk I’ve ever seen (over the LeBron dunk of a couple days ago, Vince Carter’s dunk over the Frenchman in the Olympics, and Tom Chambers’ knee-to-the-chest dunk).

I’m still buzzing.

Random Start: Strike Anywhere, “Modern English”

I think mentioned this the last time Strike Anywhere popped up in a Random Start, but I’ll say it again; you’d be hard-pressed to find a kinder, harder-working and more uplifting band than these guys. I always felt like they’ve been underappreciated in the States, despite having released four great LPs and putting on a really energetic live show night in and night out.

Flashback Friday: Ralph Tresvant, “Sensitivity” (1990)

This jam from the former New Edition frontman landed at #1 on the R&B charts back when I was a freshman in high school who wore Skidz overalls and Starter jackets in public. Despite Brandon Jennings’ best attempts to bring back the high-top fade a couple of years ago, it never really caught on again. I think we need a Ralph Tresvant revival if we’re ever going to make that happen. And it wouldn’t hurt to have Kenny “Sky” Walker, Charles Smith, and Kid from Kid ‘n Play onboard too.

Textual is the side project of producer/drummer/multi-instrumentalist Dave LeBleu, who is best known for his work in The Mercury Program (one of my favorite bands). Textual popped up a in Random Start a couple of months ago, and rather than rehashing an old post, I’ll keep it simple…if you’re into what you hear here, you need to pick up the entire Textual discography.
