HERMITOLOGY

My name is Riley, and I play drums and write music for a band called Thrice.

This is where I ramble about music, sports, food, books, interwebbery, and whatever else I feel like sharing. I apologize in advance.

In addition to my ramblings here, I write a piece for OC Weekly called "3hree Things" that runs every Tuesday, and I'm also writing over at Flip Collective on occasion.

I'm the co-founder of a baseball-specific twitter feed and blog with my friend Ian, called Productive Outs.

And last, but not least, I have a bandcamp page and a soundcloud page that I'll be posting my own music and remixes on every once in a while.

Disclaimer: The views and opinions presented on this blog are mine, and do not reflect the position or views of the band as a whole.

Random Start: Band Of Horses, “Marry Song”

Wouldn’t it be perfect if you played this at your wed-zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz*.

Buy Cease To Begin here.

*For what it’s worth. I like Band Of Horses. Quite a bit.

Random Start: Band Of Horses, “Laredo”

One of the best things about getting to play a huge festival like Pukkelpop is getting the chance (schedule permitting) to see bands that I haven’t been able to catch when they swing through So Cal because I’ve been on tour myself, and getting to see bands up close that I’d love to tour with (but that would never tour with Thrice). Last time we played Pukkelpop, I got a chance to see Band Of Horses live and was thoroughly impressed. They sounded flawless and exceeded my fairly lofty expectations.

Random Start: Band Of Horses, “Marry Song”

I had the chance to see Band Of Horses for the first time when we played Pukkelpop in Belgium last month. Although I’d heard from multiple people that the live show was a little on the boring side, I was pleasantly surprised by their set that day. They played all of their hits (“Is There A Ghost”, “No One’s Gonna Love You”, “The Funeral”, and “Weed Party”) and were pretty fantastic. I’d definitely go see them again.

RANDOM START: BAND OF HORSES, “MARRY SONG”

Granted, I’ve only been able to listen to Band Of Horses’ new record, Infinite Arms, a few times (and I think it’s a grower), but I’m starting to think that 2007’s Cease To Begin is their best work. However, there’s a very good chance that the amount of great music that has been released this month (The Black Keys, The National, Deftones, Sleigh Bells, and my discovery of Daughters’ record that came out in March) has kept Infinite Arms from grabbing me the way Cease To Begin did when I first heard it. Hearing “Marry Song” again, reminded me of when they released “Is There A Ghost” on their Myspace page as a pre-release single, and how many times I found myself going back to replay that song over and over. That was a harbinger of things to come, because I played the hell out of Cease To Begin when I got my hands on it. Maybe I’ll get there with Infinite Arms, but it’ll take some time, which is true of most great (and lasting) records.
