HERMITOLOGY

My name is Riley, and I play drums and write music for a band called Thrice.

This is where I ramble about music, sports, food, books, interwebbery, and whatever else I feel like sharing. I apologize in advance.

In addition to my ramblings here, I write a piece for OC Weekly called "3hree Things" that runs every Tuesday, and I'm also writing over at Flip Collective on occasion.

I'm the co-founder of a baseball-specific twitter feed and blog with my friend Ian, called Productive Outs.

And last, but not least, I have a bandcamp page and a soundcloud page that I'll be posting my own music and remixes on every once in a while.

Over the past couple of years…I’ve received a decent number of inquiries about which drummers I’d cite as my main influences. I tend to shy away from addressing the question of drumming influences (or at least, cringe when the question is posed) because I: a) always manage to brain fart and leave someone highly influential off the list, and b) find that who and what inspires me as a drummer is constantly changing. It’s just a tough question to answer.

In this week’s 3hree Things I write briefly about three drummers that are inspiring me at the moment.

Everyone’s been raving about the new Bon Iver for months, but I haven’t really gotten around to it yet, because I can’t stop listening to these three records.

(Not So) Random Start: Battles, “Futura”

I picked Gloss Drop up yesterday, and haven’t been able to stop listening to it. If there’s any way in hell you might not be a fan of an experimental and (mostly) instrumental rock band featuring John Stanier (ex-Helmet) and Ian Williams (ex-Don Caballero), this La Blogotheque video should pique your interest. Stanier has always been a monster behind the kit and mixing his drumming style and pocket with Williams’ pedal wizardry and angular guitar playing makes Battles a must-listen band for me.

Buy Gloss Drop here for $8.

Bonus: The album cover looks like a unicorn with a very small butthole took a very large and very messy shit.
