HERMITOLOGY

My name is Riley, and I play drums and write music for a band called Thrice.

This is where I ramble about music, sports, food, books, interwebbery, and whatever else I feel like sharing. I apologize in advance.

In addition to my ramblings here, I write a piece for OC Weekly called "3hree Things" that runs every Tuesday, and I'm also writing over at Flip Collective on occasion.

I'm the co-founder of a baseball-specific twitter feed and blog with my friend Ian, called Productive Outs.

And last, but not least, I have a bandcamp page and a soundcloud page that I'll be posting my own music and remixes on every once in a while.

Bon Iver at AIR Studios (4AD/Jagjaguwar Session)

Beautiful.

I’m speechless.

Bon Iver, “Holocene” (Official Music Video)

Wow. This is just gorgeous. (via @jordanbutcher)

Everyone’s been raving about the new Bon Iver for months, but I haven’t really gotten around to it yet, because I can’t stop listening to these three records.

Today’s Album Purchases

Bon Iver, Bon Iver

I resisted downloading the leak last month and ignored most of the pre-release hype, because I really wanted this release date to feel like the old days, when I’d dive into my first listen of a record with fresh ears, a fresh mind, and a sense of innocence.

Helms Alee, Weatherhead

I mentioned this in a post last week, but if this record is even a fraction as good as their debut, Night Terror, I’m going to absolutely love this. Its heaviness will be a perfect counterpart to the ethereal qualities of the new Bon Iver, I’m sure.

It’s only 50 seconds long, but it turned me into mush.

I cannot wait to hear this record.

Random Start: Bon Iver, “Team”

This is basically an extended outro for the track, “Creature Fear”, from Bon Iver’s For Emma, Forever Ago, which was far and away my favorite record of 2008 (even though it was self-released in 2007.) I can’t imagine that too many of you being unfamiliar with the record, or the genius of Justin Vernon ( @blobtower ), but if you don’t own this For Emma… , you are seriously blowing it.

Buy For Emma, Forever Ago here for $7.

Mothers - S. Carey

S. Carey - Mothers

Sean Carey ( @scareymusic ) is Bon Iver’s touring drummer, a classically trained percussionist, a talented multi-instrumentalist, and (now) a terrific songwriter. If you haven’t heard his debut album, All We Grow, you need to change that immediately. I bought it last Tuesday and listened to it every night before bed during our last week on tour in Europe and the UK. Still not sick of it, I listened to it five or six times in a row on my nine hour flight from Heathrow to Dallas. ANd I’m listening to it again, as I type this. It’s absolutely beautiful; the kind of record you can listen to with headphones and totally get lost in, over and over and over again. (Coincidentally, the last time a record affected me in this manner was Bon Iver’s, For Emma…)

Listen to the track above and just buy the damn thing. It has my 100% guarantee.

RANDOM START: DeYarmond Edison, “Love Long Gone”

DeYarmond Edison is Justin Vernon of Bon Iver’s former band featuring members of Megafaun. While I don’t love it as much as I love the stuff he’s done with Bon Iver, I’m mesmerized by the richness of his vocals on these recordings. He uses much less of the almost full-time falsetto he employs so frequently in Bon Iver, and it almost comes off as more endearing. The harmonies on this particular track remind me of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young a little bit (which is a good thing, in my book.) Recommended if you like good Folk, Americana, Alt-Country, or Bon Iver (obviously.)
