My name is Riley, and I play drums and write music for a band called Thrice.
This is where I ramble about music, sports, food, books, interwebbery, and whatever else I feel like sharing. I apologize in advance.
In addition to my ramblings here, I write a piece for OC Weekly called "3hree Things" that runs every Tuesday, and I'm also writing over at Flip Collective on occasion.
I'm the co-founder of a baseball-specific twitter feed and blog with my friend Ian, called Productive Outs.
And last, but not least, I have a bandcamp page and a soundcloud page that I'll be posting my own music and remixes on every once in a while.

Everyone’s been raving about the new Bon Iver for months, but I haven’t really gotten around to it yet, because I can’t stop listening to these three records.

Helms Alee’s Weatherhead is even better than I hoped it would be.
Gorgeous and heavy as hell.

I resisted downloading the leak last month and ignored most of the pre-release hype, because I really wanted this release date to feel like the old days, when I’d dive into my first listen of a record with fresh ears, a fresh mind, and a sense of innocence.
I mentioned this in a post last week, but if this record is even a fraction as good as their debut, Night Terror, I’m going to absolutely love this. Its heaviness will be a perfect counterpart to the ethereal qualities of the new Bon Iver, I’m sure.
Once I found out that they featured Ben Verellen (ex-Harkonen) I figured I’d probably like Helms Alee, but had no idea just how much I’d come to love their debut record, Night Terrors. If you like nasty guitar and bass tones, and three-part male female harmonies in dark, heavy, riff-driven rock-and-roll, you need to add this record to your collection immediately.
Their sophomore album Weatherhead comes out on June 21st and is now available for pre order. I’m really looking forward to seeing where they’re headed next.
RANDOM START: HARKONEN, “EASY PREY”
I couldn’t find any Harkonen on YouTube, so I’m opting for an audio post, because this is a band (and a song) that absolutely needs to be heard. Unfortunately, they broke up in 2005 so we don’t have any new Harkonen to look forward to, but the music they left behind has been a staple in my listening for a decade. Sonically, they make me think of what might have happened if Botch and Frodus got together and made a a beautiful, bi-polar, heavy, dischordant baby. If your interest is piqued, Shake Harder Boy is my favorite record of theirs (and one of my favorites of the decade*), and is one of a handful of heavy records that I’ll guarantee you’ll like…if you’re into heaviness, dischord, and great bass tones. Go get it. You’ll see.
Since the demise of Harkonen, bassist and vocalist Ben Verellen (brother of Dave from Botch) has gone on to form Helms Alee and Roy. The former is another favorite of mine, and well worth checking out if you haven’t already. There’s got to be something in the water in Tacoma.
*another record that makes me want to bang my head until it falls off.
