My name is Riley, and I play drums and write music for a band called Thrice.
This is where I ramble about music, sports, food, books, the interwebs and whatever else I deem worthy of sharing.
In addition to my ramblings here, I write a weekly column for Getting Blanked called "The Battle Of Los Angeles" and a bi-weekly column for PureVolume called "Everything In Its Right Place".
I'm also the co-founder of a baseball-specific twitter feed and blog with my good friend Ian, called Productive Outs.
In the past, you may have read my column at OC Weekly called "3hree Things", which ran every Tuesday for a couple of years, my writing on the Los Angeles Angels and Lakers for SB Nation Los Angeles, my newsdesk contributions for several of SB Nation's regional sites, or my sporadic contributions to Flip Collective .
And last, but not least, I have a bandcamp page and a soundcloud page that I'll be posting my own music and remixes on every once in a while.
Disclaimer: The views and opinions presented on this blog are mine and mine only, and do not reflect the position or views of Thrice as a whole.

The interview with Mark Trumbo might be my favorite interview we’ve ever done.
Yes, it’s PRODcast 39, and it’s a goddamned doozy. It goes/went like this:

- Interview subject: Mike Mark Trumbo
- Baseball talk:
- The CAN/MEX basebrawl
- HONKBAL!!!1!
- Badler on bunting: bad
- Outlooks for the Giants and Angels
- St. Patrick’s Day gear is gross
Upcoming stuff: new SHIRTS, Fantastrophe baseball, and Riley’s PureVolume column on SXSW Goodbyes, farewells, auf widersehns, etc.All music other than intro/outro theme by KEN mode off their forthcoming album, ENTRENCH. Featured songs:
- “The Promises of God”
- “Secret Vasectomy”

HOLY CRAAAAAAAAAAAP.

I need this record in my life.
Not-So-Random Start: KEN Mode, “Counter Culture Complex”
Pitchfork debuted a new track from KEN Mode’s forthcoming album Entrench, due out on March 15, and it’s a monster. I can’t say I’m surprised, as they’ve been cranking out some of my favorite heavy, energetic, riff-driven noise rock for years. Their last record, Venerable, was No. 9 on “My 12 Favorite Records of 2011” for OC Weekly, and knowing that they recorded the new record with one of my favorite producers (Matt Bayles) has me unreasonably excited to hear the rest of it.
Random Start: KEN Mode, “The Romanticist”
A monster of a track from 2008’s Mennonite, the band’s third full length. (See what I did there?) Apologies on the zombies and gore in the video, it’s all I could find. Probably not something you want to watch if you’re reading this while eating.
Big congrats to the KEN Mode dudes for snagging a Juno this year. It’s well-deserved recognition for a who is still wildly underappreciated.
Name your price for Mennonite here.
I’ve been a fan of these guys since my buddy Ian posted a clip of their video for “Extending Common Courtesy Throughout The Evening” a couple of years ago. If you’re into riff-driven, frenetic, massively heavy, occasionally sludgey and always awesome three-piece noise rock bands, you cannot get any better than this. Hell, you can’t get much better than this in any genre. They absolutely slay.
Buy Venerable here.
This record is heavy as hell.
This record is undeniably awesome.
This record is a lock for my Top 10 of 2011.
Buy it.
No stranger to the pages of this blog, KEN mode may very well be my favorite heavy band at the moment. “Obeying The Iron Will” is the second track on their fourth album, Venerable, that comes out on March 15th on Profound Lore. Through the magic of the interwebs, I’ve had some correspondence with guitarist, Jesse Matthewson, and had the privilege of hearing this record in its entirety. It absolutely destroys. I’ve said it before, but if you’re a fan of heavy music and KEN mode is not a mainstay on your playlist, you are blowing it. Big time.
Fitting, since this weekend’s playlist was dominated by these guys. As I mentioned before, you can download their two most recent records here, and buy some vinyl, or a t-shirt to help the band out. You can, and you should if you like what you hear. They just did a record with Kurt Ballou of Converge that should be out in early 2011. I’m dying to hear how that turned out.
