My name is Riley, and I play drums and write music for a band called Thrice.
This is where I ramble about music, sports, food, books, the interwebs and whatever else I deem worthy of sharing.
In addition to my ramblings here, I write a weekly column for Getting Blanked called "The Battle Of Los Angeles" and a bi-weekly column for PureVolume called "Everything In Its Right Place".
I'm also the co-founder of a baseball-specific twitter feed and blog with my good friend Ian, called Productive Outs.
In the past, you may have read my column at OC Weekly called "3hree Things", which ran every Tuesday for a couple of years, my writing on the Los Angeles Angels and Lakers for SB Nation Los Angeles, my newsdesk contributions for several of SB Nation's regional sites, or my sporadic contributions to Flip Collective .
And last, but not least, I have a bandcamp page and a soundcloud page that I'll be posting my own music and remixes on every once in a while.

Random Start: Minus The Bear, “Diamond Lightning”
Arguably one of the best songs MTB has ever written.

Random Start: Minus The Bear, “Steel and Blood”
Infinity Overhead was a nice return to form for Minus The Bear. They lost me a little bit with Omni for whatever reason, but this record pulled me right back in.
We had the chance to play one show with them (a benefit show at LA HOB with Poison The Well and Moments In Grace in 2003) and I had such a great time meeting the guys and watching them play, I really regret that we never got to do a full tour with them.

Minus the Bear - “Infinity Overhead” New Album Trailer
Holy crap. That chorus is crushing me. I cant wait to hear more.
Infinity Overhead is due out August 28th on Dangerbird.
Random Start: Minus The Bear, “The Game Needed Me”
My second favorite track from Menos El Oso (behind “Pachuca Sunrise”).

A fitting Random Start since today is apparently the 10th anniversary of Minus The Bear’s first EP release and show. This is the first track from 2007’s Planet of Ice. Their last record Omni didn’t really grab me the way I thought it would, but I love MTB and I’m eagerly awaiting the record they’re in the process of writing at the moment.
Fitting, since a lot of older Minus The Bear material reminds me of mellow, relaxing weekends for some reason. I wouldn’t mind one of those before the holiday season really starts to get hectic next week. Bah humbug.
Happy Weekending, folks.
May was such a great month for music, and I have been so captivated by new records from The Black Keys, The National, Sleigh Bells, and Deftones, I honestly haven’t even had a chance to sit down with the new Minus The Bear record, Omni, and given it a full listen from front-to-back. That’ll have to change soon.
The track above is from their second record, Menos El Oso, which just barely nudges out Highly Refined Pirates for my favorite Minus The Bear Record (and the only way it does that is if I try to discount the impact hearing a great band for the first time has on how much you value the first record you hear…which is a study for another, much longer post that I may or not get around to posting.)
