My name is Riley, and I play drums and write music for a band called Thrice.
This is where I ramble about music, sports, food, books, interwebbery, and whatever else I feel like sharing. I apologize in advance.
In addition to my ramblings here, I write a piece for OC Weekly called "3hree Things" that runs every Tuesday, and I'm also writing over at Flip Collective on occasion.
I'm the co-founder of a baseball-specific twitter feed and blog with my friend Ian, called Productive Outs.
And last, but not least, I have a bandcamp page and a soundcloud page that I'll be posting my own music and remixes on every once in a while.

Random Start: Silversun Pickups, “Boody Mary (Nerve Endings)”
I bought the new Silversun Pickups record, Neck Of The Woods, on Tuesday, but hadn’t really gotten around to listening to it until this morning. While it hasn’t quite grabbed me like Swoon did, I dig it. It seems it’s less instantly gratifying and catchy, and more of a grower.
Buy Neck Of The Woods here (for $5).
Random Start: Other Lives, “Dead In The Water”
A fitting soundtrack for a rainy day in Austin, TX.
Buy Tamer Animals here.
Random Start: Big Business, “City Ham”
I’m not sure I could describe Big Business any better than the YouTube user that uploaded this video.
Big Business have Lemmy’s balls, Mike Patton’s case of paranoia and a distinct touch of german porn dirtiness.
So I won’t. I’ll just tell you that you should probably listen to more Big Business.

Random Start: Harkonen, “Introducing The Creaker Sneaker”
If you’ve been reading Hermitology.com for a while it’s no secret that Harkonen is one of my favorite bands of the last decade, and Shake Harder Boy is one of my favorite heavy records that has ever existed. It’s timeless. I love it just as much today as when I heard it for the first time in ‘02. If you like your music heavy, nasty and angular, you’d better own this.
If you don’t, buy it here. Now.
Random Start: Ion DIssonance, “Through Evidence”
OK, so this wasn’t actually random. iTunes tried to drop three consecutive ambient songs on me (an old demo of mine that eventually became Thrice’s “Stand And Feel Your Worth”, Exxasens’ “Polaris”, and a Rachel’s track) and I needed something a little more aggressive to finish up my packing and make my 9 AM bus call.
Buy Minus The Herd here.
Random Start: NOFX, “Monosyllabic Girl”
If you had told 19-year-old me (who was listening to NOFX’s Punk In Drublic constantly during my freshman year of college, while I was playing baseball but not-so-secretly dreaming of being in a punk rock band) that I’d be touring Europe with them nine years later (Deconstruction Tour 2003), I’d have shit myself.
Buy So Long And Thanks For All The Shoes here.
Random Start: The Dillinger Escape Plan, “Endless Endings”
This is exactly what I needed after spending 21 hours in transit yesterday. (Not really.)
Buy Miss Machine here.
Random Start: David Bazan, “Bearing Witness”
Bazan’s doing another Living Room Tour in May and June. If you have a chance to see him, you’ve gotta make it happen. You won’t be disappointed.
Buy Curse Your Branches here.
Random Start: Pig Destroyer, “Lesser Animal”
Because it’s 5 AM and I have to be at the airport in an hour.
Buy Phantom Limb here.
Random Start: Iron Maiden, “The Number Of The Beast”
When we played Pukkelpop (Belgium) a couple of summers ago, I got to see these guys shred for about 90 minutes and immediately run off stage and hop directly into black Mercedes Benzes that awaited them behind the stage. I’m assuming they were driven to their fancy hotel to shower up, and then taken to the airport where Ed Force One (piloted by Bruce Dickinson) awaited them to fly them to their next gig.
That’s baller.
