HERMITOLOGY

My name is Riley, and I play drums and write music for a band called Thrice.

This is where I ramble about music, sports, food, books, interwebbery, and whatever else I feel like sharing. I apologize in advance.

In addition to my ramblings here, I write a piece for OC Weekly called "3hree Things" that runs every Tuesday, and I'm also writing over at Flip Collective on occasion.

I'm the co-founder of a baseball-specific twitter feed and blog with my friend Ian, called Productive Outs.

And last, but not least, I have a bandcamp page and a soundcloud page that I'll be posting my own music and remixes on every once in a while.

Random Start: Errors, “Germany”

They’re on Rock Action (Mogwai’s label) so they’ve gotta be good, right? The answer is yes. I’d recommended them if you like Holy Fuck, mellower Maserati, or…uh, Mogwai, I guess.

Buy Come Down With Me here.

Random Start: Band Of Horses, “Marry Song”

Wouldn’t it be perfect if you played this at your wed-zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz*.

Buy Cease To Begin here.

*For what it’s worth. I like Band Of Horses. Quite a bit.

Random Start: Pearl Jam, “Last Exit”

My iPhone made its “last exit” last night when it slid from in between my ear and my shoulder and fell into the toilet while I was peeing. Good times, friends. Good. Times.

While you buy Vitalogy here, I’ll be buying a new phone here.

Random Start: Wilco, “You Never Know”

I was hoping for a tune that would help motivate my lazy, snot-addled ass out from in front of the computer and in the general direction of the gym, and instead I got a song that makes me want to rent a convertible and drive out to the desert to smoke weed*.

*And I don’t like convertibles, hate the desert and don’t smoke weed.

Buy Wilco (The Album) here.

Random Start: Pg. 99, “Punk Rock In The Wrong Hands”

Not for the faint of heart; an awesome blend of chaos, dissonance, melody and aggression with a message. Nobody could quite pull that off the way Pg. 99 could.

Buy Document #8 here.

Random Start: Atlas Sound, “Cold As Ice”

While the title “Cold As Ice” seems fitting since several “cold as ice” Busch Lights* consumed by me and my friend, Paul Shirley, during our live-blog of last night’s horrible NBA games on TNT, the song itself is not so fitting (because of the headache I’ve got from said Busch Lights).

Buy Atlas Sound’s Let the Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel, here

*We knew they were ice cold, because Busch Light has effectively ripped off Coors Light with their Ice Cold Easy indicator thermometer on their cans. Thanks, Busch! We were lost without you.

Random Start: Radiohead, “Creep” (Acoustic)

This version is a true testament to the beauty and power of this song. It’s stripped down to it’s simplest and purest form and it’s just as (if not more) powerful than the album version on Pablo Honey. The scary thing is that as moving as this song is, Radiohead is so damn good they’ve probably got ~20 songs I’d rather hear this way.

Buy the My Iron Lung EP here.

Random Start: Holy Fuck, “Stay Lit”

I don’t listen to nearly enough Holy Fuck. You probably don’t either.

Let’s fix that.

Buy Latin here.

Random Start: Ludovico Einaudi, “Nightbook”

This is the title track from the Italian composer/pianist’s most recent album. I’m a big fan of the work of Philip Glass, Michael Andrews and Chopin, and (while I admittedly don’t know shit about classical piano or musical theory) Einaudi’s work appeals to me as sort of a blend of those three composers. It’s just beautiful stuff.

Buy Nightbook here.

Random Start: Volumes, “Two-One”

Just a little brutality to go along with your Friday morning coffee.

RIYL: Meshuggah, Vildhjarta, Structures, et al
