My name is Riley, and I play drums and write music for a band called Thrice.

This is where I ramble about music, sports, food, books, the interwebs and whatever else I deem worthy of sharing.

In addition to my ramblings here, I'm also the co-founder of a baseball-specific twitter feed podcast and blog with my good friend Ian, called Productive Outs.

I also have a bandcamp page and a soundcloud page that I'll be posting my own music and remixes on every once in a while.

Disclaimer: The views and opinions presented on this blog are mine and mine only, and do not reflect the position or views of Thrice as a whole.

Random Start: Brutal Truth, “War Is Good”

Uh … rise and grind? (I’m pretending this song is about baseball.)

Buy Evolution Through Revolution here.

Random Start: Free The Robots, “Times Like This (feat. Phil Nisco)

This was the first FTR track I ever heard, and I’ve been hooked ever since. If you like hip-hop, jazz, and/or electronic music you’ll probably dig their work. It’s a really seamless blend of analog and digital sounds that borrows from several different genres without ever feeling disjointed or clumsily cut-and-pasted together. It gets my 80s hip-hop and 60s jazz synapses firing.

They did an amazing remix of “All The World Is Mad”, a track from Thrice’s Beggars LP, and they also run a great restaurant/venue in downtown Santa Ana called The North Left (formerly known as The Crosby).

Go eat at The North Left, and go buy their music.

Random Start: Coliseum, “Seven Cities”

Wash this down with two or three cups of coffee and watch your productivity go through the roof.

I loved Coliseum’s last record, Sister Faith, and it’s been ages since I revisited the records that got me hooked on the band in the first place (Goddamage, S/T & No Salvation). I’m gonna have to fix that today.

Random Start: Cave In, “Dazed and Confused”

It’s been a while since I’ve done a “Random Start”, so I was a little scared that my iTunes Shuffle would take this opportunity to dig deep into my hard drive and find something totally awful and/or embarrassing. Thankfully, it did the exact opposite and found a rarity; one of my favorite bands on the planet covering one of my favorite bands of all-time. I got to see this cover performed live several times when Thrice and Cave In toured together in 2001, and holy crap was it amazing. The recorded version is outstanding, but the live version was a thousand times better.

Listen to (and buy) a ton of Cave In here.

Random Start: Balance & Composure, “Echo”

This track popped up on shuffle during my run this morning and gave me a serious case of the chills … right at the 2:39 mark. It’s been a while since a song has done that to me.

Buy Separation here.

Random Start: Eluvium, “One”

Some of the best ambient music to ever exist was written by Matthew Cooper. He has such a knack for creating mood, atmosphere, depth and texture without making something muddled or snoozeworthy.

Buy anything and everything that Eluvium has put out.

Random Start: Coliseum, “Fall of the Pigs”

It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these. Did you miss ‘em? No? Who cares.

Before Coliseum was a sludgy and atmospheric rock band that wrote the phenomenal Sister Faith (one of my favorite records of last year), they were an ass-kicking metal band. I’m not sure which iteration I prefer, which is to say they’re both outstanding.

(Not So) Random Start: Kowloon Walled City, “Anthem”

It doesn’t get much better than this. One of my favorite bands covering my favorite Godflesh song, with a little help from Fade Kainer of Batillus. It’s freaking outstanding.

The “Anthem”/”Lava” split is out 12/10 via Brutal Panda.

(Not So) Random Start: Polar Bear Club, “Blood Balloon”

Really digging the new PBC record … Jimmy’s new vocal style have a vague John K. Sampson meets Stay What You Are-era Chris Conley vibe that makes the whole record feel very nostalgic to me.

Buy Death Chorus here.

(Not So) Random Start: Iron Mask, “Like A Lion In A Cage”

Because you don’t have enough Belgian Neo-Classical Power Metal in your life*.

*Not true. Even if you have none, you have PLENTY.
