HERMITOLOGY

My name is Riley, and I play drums and write music for a band called Thrice.

This is where I ramble about music, sports, food, books, the interwebs and whatever else I deem worthy of sharing.

In addition to my ramblings here, I'm also the co-founder of a baseball-specific twitter feed podcast and blog with my good friend Ian, called Productive Outs.

I also have a bandcamp page and a soundcloud page that I'll be posting my own music and remixes on every once in a while.

Disclaimer: The views and opinions presented on this blog are mine and mine only, and do not reflect the position or views of Thrice as a whole.

Random Start: Balance & Composure, “Echo”

This track popped up on shuffle during my run this morning and gave me a serious case of the chills … right at the 2:39 mark. It’s been a while since a song has done that to me.

Buy Separation here.

Random Start: Eluvium, “One”

Some of the best ambient music to ever exist was written by Matthew Cooper. He has such a knack for creating mood, atmosphere, depth and texture without making something muddled or snoozeworthy.

Buy anything and everything that Eluvium has put out.

Random Start: Coliseum, “Fall of the Pigs”

It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these. Did you miss ‘em? No? Who cares.

Before Coliseum was a sludgy and atmospheric rock band that wrote the phenomenal Sister Faith (one of my favorite records of last year), they were an ass-kicking metal band. I’m not sure which iteration I prefer, which is to say they’re both outstanding.

(Not So) Random Start: Kowloon Walled City, “Anthem”

It doesn’t get much better than this. One of my favorite bands covering my favorite Godflesh song, with a little help from Fade Kainer of Batillus. It’s freaking outstanding.

The “Anthem”/”Lava” split is out 12/10 via Brutal Panda.

(Not So) Random Start: Polar Bear Club, “Blood Balloon”

Really digging the new PBC record … Jimmy’s new vocal style have a vague John K. Sampson meets Stay What You Are-era Chris Conley vibe that makes the whole record feel very nostalgic to me.

Buy Death Chorus here.

(Not So) Random Start: Iron Mask, “Like A Lion In A Cage”

Because you don’t have enough Belgian Neo-Classical Power Metal in your life*.

*Not true. Even if you have none, you have PLENTY.

Random Start: Jay-Z, “Heart of the City”

He’s sold 50 million records, has 17 Grammys, a net worth of ~$500 million, and represents some of the best athletes in professional sports.

Not a bad gig.

Buy Jay-Z Unplugged here.

Random Start: The Mercury Program, “Sultans of El Sur”

A mellow jam filled with dreamy Rhodes, hypnotic guitar loops and the phenomenal drumming of Mr. Dave LeBleu. These guys were a huge influence on some of mellower Thrice stuff from Vheissu on. Highly recommended listening.

Buy A Data Learn the Language

Random Start: Meshuggah, “Lethargica”

Often imitated, but never duplicated. Nobody even comes close, really.

Buy ObZen.

Random Start: Pelican, “Deny the Absolute”

Pelican’s new record Forever Becoming, might very well be my favorite thing they’ve ever put out. It’s everything I’ve always enjoyed about the band — riffs, melody, heaviness, dynamics, cathartic climaxes — infused with a greater sense of energy and urgency than ever before. Combine that with some of the best performances I’ve ever heard these guys give (recorded or otherwise) and you’ve got yourself a damn good record.

Buy Forever Becoming.
