My name is Riley, and I play drums and write music for a band called Thrice.
This is where I ramble about music, sports, food, books, interwebbery, and whatever else I feel like sharing. I apologize in advance.
In addition to my ramblings here, I write a piece for OC Weekly called "3hree Things" that runs every Tuesday, and I'm also writing over at Flip Collective on occasion.
I'm the co-founder of a baseball-specific twitter feed and blog with my friend Ian, called Productive Outs.
And last, but not least, I have a bandcamp page and a soundcloud page that I'll be posting my own music and remixes on every once in a while.

Over the past couple of years…I’ve received a decent number of inquiries about which drummers I’d cite as my main influences. I tend to shy away from addressing the question of drumming influences (or at least, cringe when the question is posed) because I: a) always manage to brain fart and leave someone highly influential off the list, and b) find that who and what inspires me as a drummer is constantly changing. It’s just a tough question to answer.
The bass tone that kicks in at 2:22 is otherworldly.
I think I’m gonna have to listen to Russian Circles all day today.
Buy Geneva here.
Russian Circles - “Mladek” (Live)
My favorite track from Empros.
Dave Turncrantz’s drumming on this song (and the rest of the record, for that matter) is just incredible.
Next week, Chicago post-metal outfit Russian Circles will uncage their latest full-length, Empros. As SPIN’s own Christopher R. Weingarten so wryly summarized in his review of the record, it’s an offering that updates the band’s previous “feel-good churn” by “adopting the blown-out blear of black-metal, plus some adrenalized bass-drum stutter-rawk for good measure.” Look for it on shelves (courtesy of Sargent House) next Tuesday and check out a full-stream here.
Listen to this. Love it. Buy it when it comes out on 10/25.
Dave Turncrantz’s drumming on this is just stunning.
It’s a lock for one of my top records of 2011.
Apparently, we should be getting new music from Russian Circles before the end of the year. Geneva was one of my favorite records of 2009, and I’m sure whatever comes next will be in contention for my favorites of 2011.
Russian Circles is one of my favorite bands at the moment. I think what I’m most drawn to (besides Dave Turncrantz’s fantastic drumming) is the band’s mastery of dynamics. Their ability to weave in and out between sections of delicate, hypnotic guitar loops and crushing crescendos moves me in a way that few bands can. Apparently, they’re in the studio right now recording their fourth full length, which is great news. I can’t wait to hear what they’ve got up their collective sleeve.
