My name is Riley, and I play drums and write music for a band called Thrice.
This is where I ramble about music, sports, food, books, interwebbery, and whatever else I feel like sharing. I apologize in advance.
In addition to my ramblings here, I write a piece for OC Weekly called "3hree Things" that runs every Tuesday, and I'm also writing over at Flip Collective on occasion.
I'm the co-founder of a baseball-specific twitter feed and blog with my friend Ian, called Productive Outs.
And last, but not least, I have a bandcamp page and a soundcloud page that I'll be posting my own music and remixes on every once in a while.

Random Start: Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, “Under The Midnight Sun”
This, from The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (OST), is stunningly beautiful. Reznor and Ross’ work in film scoring has been a huge inspiration on the instrumental pieces I’ve been writing on my own, but at the same time it’s been a bit defeating because is so damn good.
Buy The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (OST) here. It’s a great collection of music to wind down at the end of a long day to…very meditational.
The American Dollar | Awake In The City | Introduction Video
The American Dollar’s new record Awake In The City is slated for a March 24th release. You can hear the first single “Heavy Eyes Ignite” and pre-order the record here.
Admittedly, I’ve only known of these guys for a few months, but I’ve been listening to them a ton since I stumbled upon their work. If “Heavy Eyes Ignite” is any indication, we’re in for another outstanding release from The American Dollar.
Random Start: Aphex Twin, “Jynweythek Ylow”
A hauntingly beautiful song from the infinitely bizarre double album, Drukqs by Aphex Twin. If you want to take your ears and brain on a serious (drug-free) trip, listen to Drukqs on headphones, alone, in a dark house.
Buy Drukqs here.
The American Dollar, “Age of Wonder” (Live in Montreal)
I’ve been listening to this song a lot over the past week or so. The section that starts at 2:38 gives me the chills every time.
Buy Atlas here.
I’m not sure how or why I managed to sleep on The American Dollar for so long, but I sure am glad I found this. It’s outstanding.
For fans of God Is An Astronaut, Explosions In The Sky, Jakob, etc.
I could listen to this on a loop all day long. (And I just might.)
If you’re a fan of instrumental post-rock like Explosions In The Sky, Jakob, If These Tree Could Talk, etc. you need to own everything God Is Astronaut has ever put out.
Start by picking up “All Is Violent, All Is Bright” right here for $4.99.
A little more Brontide, only this time, it’s awesome footage of them playing their record Sans Soucci in its entirety.
[via many of you…thanks for the heads up]
Brontide - “Matador”
Hello, band-that-I-didn’t-know-existed-until-twenty-minutes-ago-but-I-watched-this-video-and-bought-your-record-immediately. Nice to meet you. I think we’re gonna get along just fine.
RIYL: Battles, Russian Circles, Adebisi Shank

One year. Twelve months. 365 days. 8,766 hours. 52,949 minutes. 31,556,926 seconds. It can seem like forever, but it’ll pass in a flash. I can’t wrap my head around how much has happened in the past 31,556,926 moments but I know that they all have the potential to matter, and that it’s incredibly important to never lose sight of that.
Download it here.
note: I wrote this on the piano at my mom’s house a few nights ago and pieced it together in Reason over the past two days. I hope you enjoy it.

This is an old demo of mine that snuck its way into the outro of “Lost Continent” from Thrice’s Alchemy Index Vol. 2 - Water EP. The piece has always been a favorite of mine whether it be a stand-alone piece or functioning as the outro for “Lost Continent”. Something about this piano line feels very Wintery to me, and tis the season for Winter tunes.
Download it for free here.
Enjoy. There’s more of this to come…
