My name is Riley, and I play drums and write music for a band called Thrice.
This is where I ramble about music, sports, food, books, interwebbery, and whatever else I feel like sharing. I apologize in advance.
In addition to my ramblings here, I write a piece for OC Weekly called "3hree Things" that runs every Tuesday, and I'm also writing over at Flip Collective on occasion.
I'm the co-founder of a baseball-specific twitter feed and blog with my friend Ian, called Productive Outs.
And last, but not least, I have a bandcamp page and a soundcloud page that I'll be posting my own music and remixes on every once in a while.

I’m really digging the new Vacationer record, Gone. I stumbled across it while listening to the Sklarbro Country podcast, did a little research and found out (and was kinda blown away by the fact) that it was Kenny from The Starting Line’s (who we’d done a few Warped Tour’s with) new project. It’s been the perfect mellow buffer to my Meshuggah-heavy playlist of late, and is a great “Summer” record. It’s kinda stimulating my Local Natives receptors.

Every Time I Die, “Drag King”
I just got my pre-order (deluxe CD, stencil, Jordan Buckley designed tee & beer coozy) in the mail, and damn…this record is a killer. It’s a little early to make this call, but I think it might be my favorite ETID record. Joe Baresi did a fantastic job on the production and engineering side, Keith Buckley’s lyrics are as stellar as ever, the riffs are outstanding, and “Legs” is an absolute beast on the drums. Good stuff, folks. Really good stuff.

Narrows, “TB Positive”
Holy crap. This new Narrows record is outstanding. Those of you who are familiar with my taste in music are probably well-aware of my undying love for Botch, and aside from getting a new Botch record, this is probably the best thing I could’ve hoped for. Dave Verellen has always had one of my favorite voices in heavy music, and he’s at the top of his game here.

East Of The Wall - “Naif”
I’m not sure how East Of The Wall slipped under my radar, because they’re right up my alley, and their latest release The Apologist is already my favorite record of 2011 (that I didn’t hear until 2012).
I’ll let NPR describe it, because they do it far more eloquently and accurately than I could ever hope to.
“Imagine the metallic flourishes of the math-rock band Don Caballero lasting much longer, the bombastic gruff of Botch injected with melody, and some super-tight, jazz-inspired guitar work.”
Buy The Apologist here. You will not be disappointed.
A gracious tip of the hat to Mark Trumbo for the heads up on these guys.
I’ve been listening to this all afternoon.
It helped me bang out 1200 words for a piece for a forthcoming FlipCollective project, and deal with a weirdo hipster girl with a panda bear backpack who decided to sit next to me at Starbucks who smelled like she shit into a bag of Fritos and smeared it all over herself.
If you’re into Animals As Leaders, you’ll probably dig this.

If you like heavy, instrumental, mathy metal, you NEED this Loincloth record. If you want a detailed description of what you might hear when you buy it, please read Aaron Burgess’ excellent review at Altpress.com.
Big thanks to Matthew Taylor from Motion City Soundtrack for turning me onto what is one of the better heavy records I’ve heard in quite a while.
